WESTWOOD ONLINE PROBLEMS *** **************************************************************************** 1) I have lots of problems getting on and staying on WOL! If you are using a version of Westwood Online prior to 3.40, you may experience problems such as garbled text, the "infinite hourglass", slow refresh, etc. Be sure when logging onto WOL to allow the Auto-updates to occur. These updates not only fix most of the problems with prior versions of WOL for Mac, but also will transfer you to the current server that the rest of the world is using. You can also get the newest version by visiting the Support section of our web site (www.westwood.com) 2) Game connections on WOL Westwood Online allows you to link to other Mac and PC players for Monopoly and Command & Conquer. The PC and Mac versions of C&C connect in exactly the same way, but Monopoly sets up somewhat differently (see below). 3) WOL Through AOL Versions of WOL prior to 3.40 were not compatible with America Online. As of this new version, AOL users can now use their Internet connection to access Westwood Online. Also, please be aware that connections to Westwood Online and the games through AOL is not the best. If you have problems connecting via AOL, keep trying during non-peak AOL hours, and you should be able to connect if you are persistant. If you still cannot get registered, send 5 choices for a nickname to helpdesk@westwood.com, and we will register you manually. However, even if you are registered, we cannot guarantee that your connections will be stable, or that you will be able to play games to completion without disconnections. If Internet gameplay is your main reason for being online, we suggest that you might look into alternate Internet providers. **************************************************************************** II. COMMAND & CONQUER *** **************************************************************************** 1) Machine requirements COMMAND & CONQUER FOR MACINTOSH SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS Power Macintosh (with Power PC CPU) required (90Mhz or greater recommended) System 7.5 or Better 8MB free RAM (16MB recommended, 16MB free for Internet play) Digital Audio via PowerMac built-in audio 2x CDROM 30 MB Hard drive space plus 10MB free to run game 14.4 modem (28.8 recommended) for modem play IPX network (via MacIPX) for LAN play Color Monitor supporting 256 colors and at least 640x480 resolution For Internet play: 28.8 modem for direct Internet connection MacTCP x 2.0.6 or Open Transport 1.1 or higher 2) Why can't I use AppleTalk to connect via network? In the case of C&C, the decision was made to use the MacIPX standard so that the game would be network compatible with IBM PCs as well as other Macs. We realize that IPX is not as easy to set up on the Mac as AppleTalk. We should have a step by step description of the process available soon. 3) Help! The game asks me to swap the C&C disk but doesn't eject it! This is a known bug that we are working on. In the meantime, if you start the game with the correct CD for the side you are playing, you will not have this problem (#1 for GDI missions, #2 for Nod missions). 4) What Extensions should I use/not use? It is a good idea to use as few extensions as possible. In particular, any RAM Doubler software or extensions can cause problems. With C&C, the speed access portion of Speed Doubler will cause lockups or stuttering in the movies. For best results, cut your extensions down to the following: Display Enabler, Apple CDrom (or cdrom toolkit), MacIPX, the Sound Manager, plus whatever else is required to boot your particular machine. 5) Video problems in C&C It is known that certain video types found on some Macs (such as the Radius video system) will cause C&C to lock up. This is also common in Macs using PCI video cards. It is highly recommended that you use the Standard Mac video system when running the game. 6) The Unimplemented Trap Error This error is caused by a conflict with certain versions of the Draw Sprocket. When installing C&C you MUST use the version of the Draw Sprocket found on the CD (1.1b1). If you already have a newer version of Draw Sprocket on your machine that is needed for other programs, copy the version from the C&C CD into the C&C Folder instead, and the game should run fine without interfering with the other version. This problem will likely be fixed in a patch. 7) Cheat Codes As with the PC version of C&C, there are no cheat codes in Mac C&C. 8) Connecting to PC versions of C&C When connecting to a PC version of Command & Conquer, whether it be modem, LAN or Internet, a few extra steps may be required. The Mac version will connect to the PC Gold version (for Windows 95) with no special steps required. When playing against a DOS version of C&C, the version of the DOS version is important. If the DOS user has version 1.07 to 1.19, he will either need to upgrade to the current 1.22 version, or use the -o command to start the game (ask the DOS user to check his readme file for information on the -o command). If the DOS user decides to use the -o command, you will need to enable the "DOS Compatibility mode" setting in your options. 9) The Multiplayer option causes a Type 11 Crash In most cases, if you get a Type 11 Crash error in the Finder, it is an indication that the MacIPX drivers/extensions are not installed correctly. Reinstalling MacIPX should fix this problem. 10) Best Game options for Multiplay If you are playing multiplayer games, it is best to have the following options turned ON in the game options screen: Turn Finder OFF Exit all other programs DOS 1.07 compatibility mode 11) Can't see other players in a Network (LAN) game The verion of MacIPX installed by C&C is an old version which is not compatable with the G3 Macs. There is a new version of MacIPX 1.3.1 with both the Extension and Control Panel available from ftp://novell.com/pub/updates/ Please note, it is not sufficient to simply replace the old extension and control panel, you also need to trash the MacIPX Preferences file, then install the new ones and restart. 12) Mac Red Alert There are no plans for a Mac port of Red Alert. Sorry. **************************************************************************** III. MONOPOLY CDROM *** **************************************************************************** 1) System Requirements MONOPOLY CDROM GAME MACHINE REQUIREMENTS 68040/25Mhz (or better) or Power PC System 7.5 or later 4MB available RAM 256 color or higher resolution monitor 15MB non-compressed free hard drive space Double-speed CDROM drive Internet play requires: Existing PPP/SLIP connection Minimum 14.4 baud modem (28.8 baud or higher recommended) 2) Connecting to games in WOL Currently, Monopoly Mac will only connect automatically to other Mac users of Monopoly. It is possible to connect to a PC version of Monopoly manually in the following manner: A) Use WOL or another metheod of contact to find your opponents If you are to be the host of the game, give your IP address to the other players. If you are to connect to a host, get his IP address. B) Make sure that you are still connected to your Internet provider, then start a new game of Monopoly. When the game asks if this is an Internet game, say NO. Put yourself in as player one; for player two, choose a NETWORK game. C) If you want to host a game, click the HOST button and wait for players to connect to you. If you are joining a host, click the JOIN button, then type in the IP address of the host's machine. 3) Problems with GO! on Monopoly There is a bug in the game that prevents $200 from being paid for landing on GO, and in rare cases, landing on GO can actually cause a crash. We are working on fixing this, but it seems to be related to the use of RAM and Speed doubler programs. Be sure to disable such programs before playing. 4) Westwood Online connections The version of Westwood Online that ships with the Monopoly CD is outdated. For the latest version, visit the support section of the Westwood web site. **************************************************************************** IV.
